Apparently, I was in Mauritius recently

SO, what do I remember of my criminally-short visit to Mauritius? Not much, but fortunately the important bits are here.

First, the great wedding reception of Stéphane and Lynn on the evening of our arrival; second, five days of rushing from one government building to another in a bid to have our passports renewed in time for us to travel to the UK (yes, we barely just made it back); third, a quick visit to Casela Bird Park; and, last, five consecutive days and nights of eating out.

Somehow, before I had time to fully realise what was happening, I was back on a plane bound for England!

  1. I had to renew my passport while in Mauritius last year. I did not realise I had to bring my ID card with me. I had to get another one issued. I wanted to get a passport for my daughter, but that did not happen. They wanted a birth certificate which show the father and mother’s name. I had the “short Canadian form” certificate which did not show these pieces of information. I can get it done by sending the documents to the Mauritian Embassy in USA.

Speaking of planes, we don’t want to fly before Angelica is older. She just is not the kind of baby who will stay in one place all the time. She was a real angel when we travelled last year though. On the way back from Maurtius, she slept for ten hours. On the way there, she timed her feeding perfectly…during landing.

  2. Recently, there was an article in the papers about the changes brought to the passport renewal procedure. Only the old passport and new photos are needed from now on. This change came just a week after we had ours done!

The format of the birth and marriage certificates has changed to an A4 sized paper, so that we had to get new ones, which added to the delay. I have about five original issues of my birth certificate in the old format, all of them now useless.

On both flights, there was a toddler who would not stop crying. We felt bad for the parents but at the same time longed for our sleep.

  3. I have heard about the new rules for passports from Didier recently. It’s a very nice step forward. Like you, I was also surprised to find that birth certificates are now in A4 when I had to apply for another one while in Mauritius.

As for the toddler, I can understand the parents. We were lucky for Angelica was true to her name. She slept for most of the first leg to London, did not cause any problem while waiting in Heathrow, and slept white a bit on the way to Mauritius. Mid-way through the flight, I had to walk with her up and down the aisle a bit, but that was understandable. She was sick of her bassinet. She timed her feeding perfectly at landing time for both flights. It was nice then for she would tell us when she was hungry by crying.

On the way back, Sheron said that Angelica slept for 10 hours on the flight from Mauritius to London.

That said, I don’t think we want to travel for the time being. She’s at an age where she wants to climb everywhere, where she wants to walk and where everything seems so interesting to her eyes. Babies grow too fast. Every afternoon, she tells my grandmother while pointing to the stairs, “si-sit, attane papa.”
