Kreyol Toupatou

Watching the 2009 BET Humanitarian Award being given away, I learned that Wyclef Jean comes from Haiti and remarked that if we were to meet him, we could speak creole to him and he would understand.

This is the location of Haiti.

And, this is the location of Mauritius.

How amazing is it that despite the distance both people speak creole with so many similarities?

Eddy.

  1. Someone from Haiti (working in Montreal) once told me that he once had a Mauritian colleague and they would speak creole.

  2. Amazing indeed. I went through that list of common Haitian Creole phrases. So similar to Mauritian Creole!
I’d love to meet someone from Haiti and converse with him/her in Creole.

  3. The Haitian creole is closer to ours than the Reunion one. I watched a programme years ago and was quite impressed.

  4. Quite Impressive…I would love to go to Haiti now…or meet someone from there too.

  5. It is not that easy to understand or speak Haitian creole. I live in Montréal and it is easier to communicate in French with the Haitian taxi drivers that i have met.
FWIW: It is very dangerous to visit Haiti these days – unfortunately despotic leaders have ruined that little island

  6. Wow it is sure nice to know that, despite the distance, there is such great similarities! :) Would love to hear that!
