TO BE ABLE to enjoy some Mauritian dholl-puri, we usually go to Mauritian Xpress in Tooting, London, which is about forty miles from Farnborough. If you thought that was a stretch, then consider that we undertake this one-hour journey every so often for the privilege of savouring dholl-puris at £1.00 a piece.

The next time you are queueing up to buy dholl-puri at the famous Mimosa’s spot or at Sapo Lapay, spare a thought for us and remember that your wait is not so bad after all.

  5. @Kurt – You can say that again :-)

@Roushdat – I’m sure Mauritian Xpress have competitors, but we don’t know about them.

@Shah – Yes, it’s very well worth the money. When we make the trip, we usually take back some dholl-puris for home freezing.

  7. @Clive – Taste is the same as Dewa and the one sold by Mimosa Studio in Port-Louis. Well, to the best of my memory :-)

Interesting fact: West indians (Jamaicans, etc.) also make excellent dholl puris. In the past, when we lived in London and closer to such communities, we ordered our dholl puri from a jamaican woman.

  9. There is a new place in Wood Green Market (North London, N22 for those who do not know!) called Mauritius Paradise!

They sell the best ‘dholl puris’ in the UK (I have tasted those from Tooting, Leyton, Edmonton) as well as really succulent ‘rotis’, briani, mine, napolitaine, etc!

Every other saturday, I go there for brunch and there is always a big queue and people waiting.

Definitely worth a try but not sure if driving from Farnborough to North London would appeal to you no matter how good the dholl puri :)

Concerning the price, £1 is not expensive seeing that it is something rare and the sellers have a niche market!

  10. @NorthLondoner – Wood Green is too far to travel to for dholl puri, but if I’m in the area on a Saturday, I will certainly try Mauritius Paradise.
