Sarah Connor is back to the future!

I WATCHED the pilot of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles yesterday. I did not expect any surprise, and thankfully, there was none. It’s as simple as we like it: killer robot hunts down boy promised to greatness as leader of the human resistance in a future where intelligent machines want the humans exterminated, and friendly robot times in to save him. We’ve seen and enjoyed it in The Terminator, T2: Judgment Day, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

What I was curious about, however, is how the producers would manage a series doomed to be benchmarked against its blockbuster-movie predecessors. They’ve used a couple of clever tricks, I am pleased to say. (This is where you stop reading if you don’t want your fun of watching T:TSCC spoiled.)

First, as should be expected, they play the infinite timelines card. It was already used in T3, whereby bombs did not start falling until much later than 1997 after the timeline was changed by the events in T2. And, they play it again here, except that the series storyline starts somewhere between T2 and T3. Knowing your T1, T2, and T3 very well, you are now asking, “Aren’t the 1990s a bit obsolete for a 2008 show?” Well, here’s the really clever part. The series builds on a new timeline off the T2 timeline and sends the heroes back to 2007, which explains why we see John so clueless about his T:TSCC exploits in T3. Actually, there is a twist, but I will spare you the spoiler; and, you’ll thank me for this.

The second trick, which has already been used in T3, is to put a female terminator in the picture. She is rather attractive and will appeal to viewers. She and John are about the same age, and she says she is “different”. I bet she will have some sort of Emotion Chip that makes her more human than the other terminators and leaves the producers with room for some romance in the series. T1 and T2 had some emotion in, but sadly T3 was pure action. Hopefully, the series will rectify that.

Add some romance for Sarah herself and a persistent cop, and you’ve got a good mix to create a lot of situations that will certainly keep the series interesting. If there’s anything missing, though, it can only be Mr Terminator, Arnie himself.

Watching that much TV can’t be good

Yesterday’s movie was The Manchurian Candidate which I missed when it came out in cinemas (and the past three years). Great movie for a Friday night.

What am I doing now? Watching TV, of course. The new series of Primeval, to be more specific.

Update: This first episode of the series has been filmed in Bentall Centre, in Kingston-Upon-Thames, our local shopping centre when we were living in Malden Manor. It’s funny how obvious bloopers are when you know the location of filming quite well.

Christmas is the time to indulge in movies

I SPENT most of the Christmas and New Year holidays watching random movies.

  • A Lot Like Love

This is my favourite of the lot. It is a simple love story, yet it makes you feel like falling in love all over again just by watching it.

  • I Am Legend

Like 28 Days Later and 12 Monkeys, this movie has a theme that disturbs me a lot — the idea of Man becoming extinct makes me very uneasy — but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And I think the dog deserves an award.

  • The Others

This movie is The Sixth Sense, but inside-out. If you have watched it, you will know what I mean.

  • Shooter

I do not like Mark Wahlberg a lot, but I think he plays good action movies.

  • The Family Man

This is another great romantic comedy with a Christmas feel.

I also enjoyed the older HouseSitter and Rain Man.

It seems I have hit my limit of how many movies I can take: the three Terminator movies are playing back-to-back on TV, yet I cannot be bothered.
